What Is Rehash Sales? A Human Approach to Unsold Estimates

You took the call, asked the questions, and sent the estimate. Then: nothing. When you’re running a small business, that silence can be frustrating. But it doesn’t tell you why the customer hasn’t moved forward.

Rehash sales, in plain English

Rehash sales means returning to a sales opportunity that didn’t close the first time. In home-service businesses, that often means following up on an unsold estimate. You may also hear it called sales recovery or estimate follow-up.

It isn’t a new cold lead. The customer has already had a conversation with your business. The next conversation should start there, not with a fresh sales pitch. ServiceTitan’s contractor playbook describes a dedicated follow-up role for unsold estimates; your own timing should reflect the customer’s wishes and your business policies.

An unanswered estimate is not a diagnosis

A customer may still be comparing options, checking timing, or trying to understand the scope. They may have chosen someone else. You won’t know from an empty reply thread alone.

Review the original notes before reaching out. Was there a question left unanswered? Did they ask you to contact them later? Was the estimate still valid? A useful conversation addresses what actually matters to that customer, rather than assuming the price is the problem.

Give the conversation a purpose

A respectful follow-up explains who is calling, which estimate it concerns, and why you’re reaching out. Ask whether the customer still wants help with the project, then listen. If they need clarification, provide accurate information. If they’ve moved on, record that and respect their decision.

Don’t lead with a discount just to get a response. Your pricing and approval policies still apply. If a request falls outside them, get the owner’s authorization rather than making a promise you can’t keep.

  • Review the estimate and the last conversation.
  • Check contact preferences and any request to stop.
  • Clarify the customer’s current question or decision.
  • Record the outcome and any agreed next step.

Recovery should protect your reputation

Not every estimate should become a sale. An unsuitable job or an unwilling customer is not a win. A clear yes, a clear no, or a customer-approved later date is more useful than an endless series of check-ins.
